This Spring has had a lot of
storms and heavy rain, resulting in our creek being much higher than
usual. Combine the heavy water flow with
the aging culvert under Surfside Road, and we have sinkholes! The bottom of the 48” culvert has rusted
through, and the high water flow has washed away much
of the fill around the pipe.
The Road had to be closed.
The holes started small, but grew in a couple of days.
This was one of the first
holes which we attempted to fill, in order to make the
road passable and give us time to plan and schedule repairs. This hole is about 3.5 feet across and 1.5
feet deep, with a gap going down beyond sight.
The fill lasted until the next rain, which opened up
even bigger sinkholes.
Note the cracks in the road as
it caves in.
This was 2 days after one of
the rainstorms. Water cut multiple
pathways to the Lake.
Other Roads have damage as well, but can easily be repaired by grading and adding
additional slag as needed.
